northwest d.c. it is tuesday morning, july 5th, 2011. off to a pretty good start so far. thank you for waking up with us. >> i'm steve chenevey. >> i'm wisdom martin. >> it was a busy day yesterday. >> big crowd last night on the national mall for the fireworks show. security was tight. there was a little bit of rain but other than that, things went pretty well. >> that's right. tucker barnes is here now to talk about if things are going to continue to go well here today. >> i think so. kind of typical july weather expected with highs back into the upper 80s and low 90s. we'll take rain and thunderstorm out of the forecast for the day. we'll get a one-day break and we'll return tomorrow. let's get to it. we'll show you the satellite- radar and let me mention we are getting widespread reports of fog now. reports of visibility is less than a quarter mile in places like martinsburg. some fog developing south of spread it rickburg. be ready to that. that is the worst part of the forecast this morning. shower activity, the thunderstorms that developed

during the evening last night. you can see those generally south of the city. south an east of the city down towards ocean city. here in washington, i think we'll see a teasent amount of sunshine. more sunshine than yesterday. should be a nice bright day and highs will top out in the upper 80s and low 90s. right now at reagan national, we are starting off on the warm side. 75, humidity 71%. that is a combination for much uncomfortableness. that is a word? >> it is now. >> thank you. there is your forecast for today. 90 in washington. 88 in frederick. 91 in la plata. 92 in fredericksburg. showers and thunderstorms will stay to our south. >> let's check in with lauren to see if there is good news on the giant foods good morning. thank you for having me on the man show today. an accident at the dulles airport access road. watch for police activity

there. elsewhere, things are looking pretty good. let's take a live look. volume builds from woodbridge across the occoquan. the hov lanes heading northbound here and things starting to slow there. on the beltway, looking pretty good. up towards 66, your lanes are open and incident-free. out are loop looks good as you head toward the wilson bridge. here we are at the american legion bridge between montgomery county and sky fox was flying over the scene in montgomery county. and they were traveling over the beltway at new hampshire avenue, not seeing any problems there. as you travel the out are loop from college park toward silver spring, you should be looking pretty good. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> all right. also new this horn, fairfax county police are investigating a deadly stabbing in fairfax county. investigators believe that the stabbing took place at a hem in reston. police were called to the home on colvin meadows lane around 10:20 last night.

the victim is a 62-year-old man. no other information has been released at this point. we'll continue to follow the story throughout the morning. back to the fourth of july celebrations now here in washington. president obama hosted an event at the white house. the first family welcoming more than 1200 members of the military and their families to the south lawn where they enjoyed barbecue and an unmatched view of the fireworks. president obama also took time out to say thank you. >> in many ways you think that that small band of patriots who signed their names to the declaration of independence and risked their lives for freedom might be surprised to see their legacy all these years later. a nation that has led refuse lieutenant governors in commerce, that sent a man to the moon, that lifted up the poor, cured the sick, a nation that fought for democracy and served as a beacon of hope

around the world. >> this year's fourth of july celebrations mark the 235th anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence. lawmaker will object capitol hill this morning trying to hammer out a deal to raise the ceiling of america's debt. the obama administration maintains it must be raised by august 2nd or the u.s. will begin to default on its debt. republicans want deep spending cuts to go along with any debt ceiling increase. there is talk that lawmakers may cut a short-term deal that would include spending cuts and push back the looming deadline by six to eight months. a look at the morning's other top stories, violence ate fourth of july celebration in baltimore. a 4-year-old boy was shot in the leg as he was leaving the inner harbor with his parents around 10like 10 -- around 10:00 last night. it is not clear in the shoot -- if the shooter aimed at the boy. he was taken to johns hopkins

children's center and was reported in stable condition. prince george's county council members will meet behind closed doors to talk about what it do with their colleague leslie johnson. she pleaded guilty last week in the corruption scandal that brought down jack johnson. so far, she says she won't resign her seat on the council. she set to be sentenced in october. four fellow council members and the current county executive have said that johnson should step down. new this morning a close call if a maryland family. >> sarah simmons is live in aspen hill with the latest. >> reporter: this happened very early this morning, 12:20 this morning to be exact at parkland drive and aspen hill road. the house at the intersection here is this one right back here. they have been working all morning long to board it up. but earlier this morning, there was an suv that had plowed right off the street and into it. take a look at the video.

plus say a 22-year-old woman was drive ago long aspen hill road when she hit two parked cars and then rammed right through this home at the intersection. the suv she was driving came to rest inches from a woman who lives here as well as her husband and son. she was on the couch at the time. listen to what her experience was. >> everything happened so fast and suddenly everything collapsed and the closet was flying, the washing machine and the walls all coming towards me and so i knew -- i said i'm going to die right now. >> reporter: she had just returned from the hospital in good condition, expected to be okay, very shaken up. i spoke with her husband. he says he was in a different room at the time.

their son was in the bedroom. police have arrested a 22-year- old woman. she has been charged with driving under the influence. coming up next, we'll continue to follow the casey anthony trial. the fate of the mother accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter now in the hands of a jury. >> clean-up continues on the yellowstone river following an oil spill. now, he can on mobil admits the problem is larger than first thought.

the fate of casey anthony is now in the hands of a jury. they started deliberating yesterday around noon but did not reach a verdict. anthony is charged with first degree murder in the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter caylee. if convicted, she could face the death penalty. booms an absorbent pads are being used to help clean up the oil spill in montana which happened when officials believe a pipeline ruptured that sent between 750 and 1,000-barrels

of oil into the yellowstone river. exxon mobil acknowledges it is a bigger problem than first thought. exxon now says it was not trying to suggest that the 10- mile comment initially was not the limit of exposure. atlantis is scheduled to take off on friday. the astronauts will work on a mission to deliver supplies to the international space station. found out who won this year's nathan's hot dog eating contest. >> the weather held out for the most part at last night's fourth of july celebration. we are checking in with tucker for your full forecast when fox 5 morning news continues.

top title in the fourth of july hot dog eating contest. he ate 62 hot dogs with buns in 10 minutes packing on an extra 20,000 calories. for his efforts, he wins $10,000. also, sonia the plaque widow thomas of alexandria, no strunger to the showdown, she won the first ever all-women's competition eating 40 hot togethers and buns in 10 minutes. she weighs in at about 105 pounds. >> impressive. >> i take it back. i think that is a sport. >> i think it's competition. >> look at the pain on their face. you can see agony of defeat all over that. >> not buying that. you guys feel better that sonia bested both of you guys and she is the champ. >> she is the best. she blew me away. >> she is the champ. >> steve and i had an eating contest with her years ago. >> hot wings and they were

are at the moment. currently 75 at reagan national. 72 in leonardtown. baltimore, 69. a lot of 60s breaking out to our north and west. look at martinsburg. us that comfortable 62. 64 in hagerstown. west here of the first range of the appalachians, we are getting some pretty good fog developing the mart unsburg had visibility less than a quarter -- martinsburg had visibility less than a quarter mile at last report. here in washington, points north and west, we'll clear out and be in for a mostly sunny day. we have high pressure off to the north and west. it is trying to nose in here. it won't be strong enough to take over our weather last week. for the remainder of the day, we should be in for plenty of

like we have a tow truck trying to get that out of the way. the good news is light volume continues down towards springfield so it shouldn't slow you down too badly. now, trafficland, we've got a view of a wreck on 66 as you head eastbound after 234 business off on the right shoulder. things pretty slow there heading into the sunshine. heading toward the beltway, you are running pretty well. 95 northbound, thins look good as you head up towards lorton through newington. no problems on 395. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. we now know more this morning about a bicyclist killed in sunday night's storms. he was riding his bike on the c&o canal tow path near poolesville around 7:00 sunday night when he was hit by a falling tree. man was identified as neil red sox of forest hills, new york. authorities say he was in the area on a bike path trip riding from harpers ferry to d.c. a dangerous day on the water.

rescue team will continue their search this morning for a boater missing in anne arundel county. the 25-year-old was thrown from a boat whether it made a hard turn yesterday omplet the potomac last night, one man died after he slipped and fell from a boat near the memorial bridge. the business beat is up next. how does more than 56 miles per gallon sound? the obama administration wants to make it happen but automakers could have a hard time getting in gear. you never know what you will find in the basement. vehicle overs have found treasure adding up to at least $11 billion in a vault under a temple in india. it includes replicas of coconut shells made of pure gold, gold chains as long as 18 feet along with rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls. search was order by india's supreme court as it tries to seek more transparency for the administration of the temple. of bra   --

soy the obama administration presenting a challenge to automakers that will benefit you but it could be tough to accomplish in these tough economic times. wouldn't know that by checking the markets though. we'll check in with lauren simonetti. >> pry was tremendous for stocks. it was supposed to be a low day and we had huge gains bringing the major averages, all three of them, up between 5 and 6% for the week of the best week for stocks in two years. so obviously the upward momentum continued and it is continuing this morning. dow futures up 37 points. >> it is great news. we are following along there. the government wants the miles per gallon to really move up, like double from where they are now. is that possible? >> it is possible. "new york times" is reporting that the obama administration as well as the automakers are locked in negotiations with a proposal expected in september to raise fuel economy standards

to 56.2 miles per gallon if all new american cars and trucks by the year 2025. that would put the american standards in line with those in asia as well as europe but it is doubling what we have now currently. the auto industry still recovering two years after the recession says it is possible but if you want to save billions of dollars at the gas pump, we need money and incentives, tax incentives, fueling stations, what have you. >> if you were at coney island, how many nathan's hot dogs could you have eaten. >> where have you been. i was part of the fox business hot dog eating contest on friday and i ate three. >> i think that is about my limit thank you very much. hope you had a great 4th. >> you too. it is not the wake-up call that anybody wants. we'll tell you what sent a car crashing into a home last night as police continue to investigate the scene this morning.

huge crowd down on the mall yesterday for last night's famous fireworks show. security tight, of course, and a little bit of rain but other than that, things went pretty well. beautiful display last night over our nation's capital. >> a beautiful display today we can only hope. >> i think so. we'll have more sunshine than yesterday and a little less humidity as well. i think it will feel a little more comfortable for you with highs once again back in the upper 80s near 90s. that is kind of typical for this time of year. rain showers you just mentioned are off to the east. let's take a look at the radar. we'll show you the showers and no reports of thunderstorms this round but you can see there you go off to the lower eastern shore here so salisbury still getting a leftover shower.

ocean city, bethany beach, rehoboth, you might see one or two more sprinkles, light showers. that will be in for a slightly quieter day today. the frontal system we've been talking about the last couple of days is just far enough to our south that i think the threat for showers and thunderstorms diminished around here today. for the most part, it should be a bright and sunny day. again being a little less humidity than yesterday. that being said, it is humid this morning. we have a lot of fog across portions of the area, particularly north and west. temperatures, 75 at reagan national. 66? frederick. 66 in win had of ther. the areas you see in the 60s experiencing fog this morning as the dew point temperature also in the 60s. here is your forecast for today. 90 in washington. 89 in front royal. how about a 92, the hot spot, always is this time of year in fredericksburg. >> nice. >> i've got weather guy coming up. wisdom, you get a chance to play. steve plays all the time. >> so i have to get involved in it. maybe i can guess at it, see if i can get it right.

slowing. we are seeing slow traffic inbound brent avenue, alabama avenue, pennsylvania is heat advisoriy at branch. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. new this morning, a car crashes into a home in maryland. >> thee people were up side at the time. fox 5's sarah simmons is live in aspen hill with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: well, i want to give you an idea of exactly how this happened. police are telling us that the car crashed into the home at about 12:30 this morning. here is the track that it apparently took. police say it hit two parked cars and then somehow, it still had the speed to come up and through here, up this hill and then into the back. the house that you can't other than see from here because it is that far up the hill. that gifts you an idea. if you take the video, you see where the suv ended up. this is a home at parkland drive and aspen hill road in aspen hill. police say the suv that she was driving came to rest inches from a woman who lives here and

was on the couch at the time. her husband was in a separate bedroom. she was in the living room. her son was in another bedroom and he explained what he heard and saw when the crash occurred. tax a listen. >> i heard my wife saying that she was bleeding and i couldn't get around to get and get to her. than my son was upset so i climbed out the side window and went around to the front and tried to get into some of the commotion. >> reporter: now, everyone thankfully is doing okay. other woman was taken to the hospital who was laying on the couch. she is doing all right. there were three of them total in the house. police have arrested the driver of the suv, a 2 #-year-old woman. so far, we don't have any identification on her but she was arrested and charged with trying under the influence. a 22-year-old woman was

lifeguards are on duty. clean-up continues in parts of arlington hit hard by sunday night's storms. at last check, about 1400 dominion customers were still without power this morning. sherry ly has a look at all the damage. >> reporter: the sound of chain saws instead of fireworks filled the air in arlington, hit a by violent storm before the fourth of july. >> i saw the tops of trees being blown off. >> reporter: a tree pierced the roberts' roof and smashed their jeep grand cherokee. >> my wife was left -- left our driveway here. otherwise, she would have been dead also. >> reporter: the wind split open this white oak, one of the oldest in arlington crashing through the living room, dining room and kitchen. >> i was doing the dishes where it eventually came down through the house.

>> our neighbor yelled tornado and all of us rushed downstairs. >> reporter: the violent wind and rain lasted, some say minutes, some say just seconds. this was not a tornado. national weather service says it was a macro burst, a downward burst of heavy winds that hit the ground and spread its destruction more than two and a half miles. >> you could see all the trees, all of them bending over and just toppling over onto homes just like -- it was a loud noise. >> reporter: a care vain of doe minute vince onpower crews spread out to assess the damage and make repairs. >> we were climbing over the wires and that was the scary part. we weren't sure what was live and what was not. >> reporter: on rock springs road, trees came down trapping people in these cars. >> he said hurry and back up, let's get out of here some

other way. she looked in the rearview mirror and here is this big tree that had fallen down behind them. >> reporter: in so many cases, seconds or even feet made all the difference. the winds are estimated at between 60 and 70 miles per hour during that storm here in arlington. what has made it difficult for the power crews is they had 14 utility poles that had to be repaired or replaced. in addition, they were working in 70 different locations to try to restore power. while it has been difficult for the people here to be without electricity, a lot of them say look, when you see the tornado damage in a place like joplin, missouri, this is nothing. in arlington, sherry ly, fox 5 news. pepco is showing some signs of improvement. the utility has faced widespread criticism from customers would basically come to expect outages. it has been stepping up up its prep rigs ahead of severe weather and it looks like it may be working. after sunday's storms, more than 15,000 pep owe customers were without power.

alarming results from a recent study on antidepressant use. researchers found children born to women would took ss ri. antidepressants during pregnancy may have a slightly higher rick of having autism. doctors say it is the first study showing a possible link between the drugs and autism and the findings should be considered preliminary. a french writer plans to file a legal complaint accusing dominique strauss-kahn of raping her back in 2002. the woman said the former head of the international monetary fund attacked her when she went

to interview him in paris. her lawyer says she has already discussed the incident publicly. strauss-kahn is currently charged with sexual assault against a manhattan hotel housekeeper. prosecutors revealed late last week that the housekeeper's credibility may be in question. strauss-kahn was freed on bail but the charges have not yet been dropped. hackers attack a fox news twit are account and post updates claiming the president was assassinated. hackers broke into the twit are account early today and left six tweets claiming president obama had been shot in iowa. fox news calls the tweets malicious. of course, fox news owned by the parent company of fox 5. it is their job to serve the country. it turns out many of our nation's decision makers got that call long ago. jennifer davis with more now on the cx between the boy scouts and congress. the connection between the boy

-- the connection between the boy scouts and congress. >> virginia's cub scout den seven and eight mixes fun and learning. >> it teaches you to have a good reputation. >> reporter: these little ones say they would like to the engineers, lawyers and unhaven'tors. what do you want to invent? >> a flying car. >> reporter: but politics? do you have any desire to be a politician? >> no. >> reporter: most senior republican in the senate wasn't focused on politicians either as a boy scout during world war ii. but becoming an eagle scout and earning merit badges for everything from public speaking to scholarship so shaped richard lugar, he has many scouting items hanging in his office. >> i believe that scouting does bring about a degree of maturity, maybe a heightening of ambition. >> reporter: senator lugar is said to be one of just 31 eagle scouts who are now members of the 112th congress. of the more than 500 lawmakers

here, a staggering 206 of them have a connection to scouting. >> i think scouting builds that within us that is about public service and commitment to our country. >> reporter: sherrod brown first met astronaut john glenn as an eagle scout and then 40 years later when he became a member of the senate. >> it is a good tradition. it has endured for a hundred years because it teaches discipline and it is all about service. >> reporter: and george's stanford bishop says being an eagle scout not only inspired him to go into public service. he says it earned him votes too. >> i was running in a district that had a large number of nonafrican-americans. one of the members came up to me after the speech and said if you were an eagle scout, you had to be a good man and that is why i voted for you. >> reporter: given the road connecting scouting and congress, it does macyou wonder if any of these young scouts

will one day trade in the scouting motto for an oath of office. >> on my onor, i will do my best to do my duty to god and my country to help other people at all times. >> to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. >> reporter: on capitol hill, jennifer davis, fox news. >> that's great. >> that is a great idea. >> i missed out on all that when i was a child. >> we were all saying we didn't get too far along. >> we turned out okay. >> so far, so good. got to wait for the end of the story. let's get right to the weather. we have a lot to talk about. the big headline is typical summer weather expected for the next week or so. highs each day in the upper 80s and low 90s. overnight lows in the up -- upper 60s and low 70s. the difference from yesterday and today, the shower activity, the thunderstorms that developed late in the day yesterday, particularly to the south and west of the city are drifting out to sea here. that is good news.

we are trying to get a drying trend established here north and west. here we are in washington. you see the clear skies out into indiana and ohio. that is an area of high pressure and that will tries to nose in here at least today. the winds have shifted out of the north and it will do its best to dry out the atmosphere. that being said, we are getting localized fog developing particularly north and west of the city. hagerstown, martinburg, winchester, reporting visibilities less than a quarter mile. frederick, 66 at this hour. 62 in martinsburg. your forecast for today, rather straightforward. code orange air quality in effect again today. i think this is our fourth or
